Living in Ancient Egypt- School

  • System of writing with hieroglyphics took many years to learn

  • One or two children in every hundred learned to read and write well

  • Usually only the children of Pharaohs, and government officials, as well as the children of the most important people were the ones that learned to read and write

  • Young scribes practiced writing on boards

  • Experienced scribes wrote on papyrus scrolls, Scribes usually started school at the age of four and ended at age fifteen

  • Normally only boys went to school, girls were not allowed to go to school

  • Classes were held in the open air

  • Lessons were based on written textbooks that didn't change for centuries

  • Textbooks were long scrolls made up of several sheets of papyrus

  • Learning things by heart was very important as well as learning to speak clearly and confidently
